The Invitation
For two weeks in Winter 2009, the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta (YEA), current winners of the Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, will make its first ever trip to the Far East as we visit the Zhejiang province of the People’s Republic of China. YEA will join Atlanta business leaders as part of our first cultural and business delegation representing the City of Atlanta to China.
YEA transforms young people through the arts by providing free training in the performing arts, as well as the opportunity to create original musical dramas tackling the gripping issues they face in their daily lives. These heart-pounding productions, addressing topics such as domestic violence, teen pregnancy, AIDS, child abuse, loss of community and love of self, have been performed for more than a million people on three continents. YEA will celebrate the New Year in China with our trip scheduled for December 26, 2009, to January 6, 2010; leading us into our 20th Anniversary year.
The Project
With a population of over 1.3 billion and a 2007 real GDP growth rate of over ten percent, China is undergoing an unprecedented economic boom. Atlanta’s prestige as a global city continues to grow as it continues to forge business and cultural linkages, especially in China. The Youth Ensemble of Atlanta (YEA) will take part in a business and cultural exchange program organized by Arcom Group, Inc. (USA) and Hangzhou Arcom Business Consulting Company (China). Created to promote cultural understanding and improvement of business relationships, this is a business and cultural exchange program between metropolitan Atlanta businesses, the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta and their respective counterparts in Zhejiang province, China. For two weeks, YEA and Atlanta business leaders will take part in a four-city tour of the Zhejiang province, including Hangzhou. Each stop will include opportunities for cultural and business exchange, including performances and workshops offered by YEA members and leadership.
What We Need Our hosts will be providing housing, most food and local transportation once we arrive in China, so that leaves us with only $75,000 in expenses. These include airfare for 45, visa and passport fees, shipping costs and funds for incidental expenses. We already have fundraising plans in place using our parents, ensemble members and public performances to raise funds, but we still have a long way to go to reach our goal. With the full amount raised, the trip will be completely free for all of our youth. Many come from economically challenged homes that are not able to cover even minor costs of the trip and we do not want any of them to miss this opportunity because they cannot find the funds to make it happen.
