The Ensemble, Staff and Chinese Youth in Hangzhou
Atlanta Youth Make a Splash in China
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 6, 2009 (Atlanta, GA) – The Youth Ensemble of Atlanta (YEA), the South’s premiere youth theatre company, proudly returns to Atlanta after their debut Chinese tour of the Zhejiang province. With the help of many friends and supporters, YEA was able to take 35 youth, staff and chaperones more than 7,000 miles around the globe to perform in three Chinese cities at the invitation of the Hangzhou Grand Theater in the province’s capital.
YEA took part in a business and cultural exchange program organized by Arcom Group, Inc. (USA) and Hangzhou Arcom Business Consulting Company (China). The trip included performances in Zhoushan, Hangzhou and Ningbo, as well as an open rehearsal and conversation with a group of Chinese performing arts students. Youth from both countries had the opportunity to ask their peers questions and share their experiences of training, how they chose their path and even musical scales and dance styles.
“This was an amazing experience.” exclaimed Executive Director Deborah Barber, “We were thrilled to represent the City of Atlanta to the Chinese people. We learned so much about the culture and proudly shared our experiences and art with them. This is a trip our ensemble will never forget and hopefully the beginning of a great partnership.” YEA performed a collection of pieces from our original productions Endangered Species, Jekonni’s Song, Soweto! Soweto! Soweto! A Township is Calling and Urban Holiday Soup, as well as songs created specifically for touring opportunities, including “Power of One” (created by YEA ensemble member Darius Dixson) and “One Billion Stories”.
