CAMP OVERVIEW
The Youth Ensemble of Atlanta (YEA) theatre company, brings their unique approach to arts training and youth development to a brand new summer arts camp.
Campers will experience the depth and breadth of the Harlem Renaissance – political, literary arts, visual arts, dance, theatre and the club scene of the era. The camps will include both informational classes, performing arts training, and the opportunity for public performance.
THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
The Harlem Renaissance, emerging toward the end of World War I in 1918, blossomed in the mid- to late 1920s, and then faded in the mid-1930s, marked the first time that mainstream publishers and critics took African American literature seriously and that African American literature and arts attracted significant attention from the nation at large. No common literary style or political ideology defined the Harlem Renaissance. What united participants was their sense of taking part in a common endeavor and their commitment to giving artistic expression to the African American experience. During the period, some 16 black writers – including Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston and Nella Larsen – published more than 50 volumes of poetry and fiction. Diversity and experimentation also flourished in the performing arts and were reflected in the blues singing of Bessie Smith and in the jazz music of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Artist Aaron Douglas adopted a deliberately “primitive” style and incorporated African images in his paintings and illustrations.COST
YEA endeavors to keep costs reasonable for all participants at only $150 per week ($600 for the entire program) for the camp hours of 9 AM to 4 PM. We will also offer early drop-off (7:30 AM) or late pick-up (6:00 PM) - each only $10 per week.
